Systems In Depth 1.2 Flashcards
What is a closed system?
Exchanges energy with surroundings but not matter > does not exist in pure forms in nature, the Earth is considered to be one
What is an isolated system?
Nothing goes in or out, neither mass nor energy > does not exist naturally
Boundaries of a system
Physical systems with physical boundaries, sharp such as a coastline from ocean/shore
Transitional such as gradual change in vegetation
Three components of a system
Storages of matter/energy
Flows (inputs/outputs)
Processes transforming matter/energy > photosynthesis
Inputs
Import of material and energy across the system boundary
Arrows in
Outputs
Export of materials and energy across the system boundary
Arrows out
Flows
Flow and pathways (fluxes) within the system along wig ugh the energy and material pass
Stores
Storage area within the system where energy and material is stored for varying lengths of time before being released into flows
A box
How is the size of flows depicted?
Size of arrows are representative of the size of the flow if it is know.
What is an open system?
Exchanges both energy and matter with surroundings > natural systems
