Sustainability Part Two 1.4 Flashcards
Ecological footprint
Measurement of a hypothetical area of land and water required to sustainably provide all resources and absorb pollutions at a rate at which they are being consumed by a population.
Can be converted into how many planters needed if everyone lived that lifestyle.
What factors increase the EF of a population?
More use of fossil fuels Increased use of energy High level of imported resources Louts if CO2 waste High food consumption Meat-rich diet Population growth
What factors decrease the EF of a population?
Reducing use of resources Recycling and reusing Improve efficiency of resource use Reducing pollution Transporting waste to other countries Reducing population
What is the EIA?
Environmental impact assessment.
Used to predict/assess potential impacts of a new project
Called a baseline study
What is the purpose of the EIA?
Identifying impacts
Predicting scale of potential impacts
Limiting the effects of impacts to acceptable levels
What are some issues with the EIAs?
Each country has their own requirements for the EIA.
No clear boundaries of where the investigates system ends.
Does not take into consideration the indirect impacts of a project.

How can sustainability be assessed?
Biodiversity
Population
