Ecosystem Structure 2.1 Flashcards
Food web
Shows flow of energy interconnected to many organisms (all possible food chains)
Trophic level
Feeding level (position of an organisms on a food chain)
Producers
Producers, perform photosynthesis, autotrophs, plants
Comsumers
Heterotrophs, can’t synthesize their own food
Primary consumer
Herbivores (eats plants)
Secondary consumers
Omnivores (eats both plants and animals)
Tertiary consumers
Carnivores (eats meat)
Decomposer
Consumers that release nutrients, bacteria or fungi
Detritivores (scavenger)
Feed on dead bodies of other organisms, earthworms or vultures
Pyramid
Show differences that exist between tropic levels , 10% energy passes through level, 90% released as heat (respiration)
Pyramid of biomass
Dry weight of all organic matter of a given trophic level in a food chain or food web
Pyramid of energy
Less chemical energy for higher trophic level
Pyramid of numbers
Shows the total number of organisms at each trophic level
Bioaccumulation
Concentration of toxins increases in an individual organism’s tissues
Biomagnification
Concentration of toxins increases as the trophic level increases
