System Diagrams 1.2 Flashcards
Transformation
Change of chemical or physical nature
Energy flows
Cannot be recycled, but it is used to do the work involved in recycling matter
Material flow
Material can be used and reused, and whilst they flow through systems they can also be recycled
Feedback
Mechanisms that controls the flow within a system > feedback loop
Positive feedback
Exists when the feedback serves to further change the element that originally changed, in the same direction amplifies the initial change triggered by external factors making changes bigger
Destroys the stability within a system
Negative feedback
Dampens down or suppresses system changes promoted by external factors
Maintains/regulates system stability by self-regulation (homeostasis)
Homeostasis
Look up
Gaia hypothesis
Earth is maintained by a grand homeostatic system, plant and animal species have adapted to the chemical properties of the environment as a cause-effect relationship
Transfer
Normally things move through a system, a change of location
