SYS103K, Threat Weapon Systems Flashcards
What are the main characteristics of combat reconnaissance vehicles?
- Designed for operations at or beyond the FLOT
- Not designed to initiate combat but to survive if engaged
Note:
Armored strike cars, light patrol vehicles and and light strike vehicles are also commonly employed in a reconnaissance role.
Examples:
BRDM-2, EE-9, BRM-1K
What are the main characteristics of armored fighting vehicles?
Usually classified into one of two categories:
- Main battle tanks (MBT): tracked, heavily armored, gun 75 mm or more, 30 metric tons or more.
Examples: T-62, T-72, T-80
- Light tanks: tracked, armored, gun 60 mm or more, lighter weight than MBT.
Examples: PT-76, Type 63a.
What are the main characteristics of light armored fighting vehicles?
Armored personnel carrier (APC):
Intended to carry soldiers to the close combat zone, then dismount them for their commitment to the fight.
Infantry fighting vehicles (IFV):
Designed to fight with soldiers onboard, to carry the soldiers forward without dismounting them if possible, and to support them with direct fires if they do dismount.
Examples: BTR-80, MT-LB, BMP-3
List the five categories of artillery and their characteristics.
Command and reconnaissance:
Locate targets, guide laser guided projectiles, and BDA
Cannon:
Includes guns and howitzers
Self-propelled cannons:
Continuous support to mechanized forces
Multiple rocket launchers:
Deliver heavy firepower at decisive moments
Mortar:
Short range high angle fire support at echelons as low as company
List the characteristics of air defense artillery (ADA).
- Can be towed or self-propelled
- Move with ground troops (Bn or Rgt)
- Tactical range up to 45,000 ft (13,300 m)
- Vertical range up to 65,000 ft (20,000 m)
List the characteristics of radar guided surface-to-air missile systems (SAMs).
- Detect and acquire the target aircraft using pointing data from command and control (C2) and/or IADS
- Track target and guide missile to intercept
Examples: SA-6, SA-11, SA-15
List the characteristics of infrared SAMs.
- Passive homing seekers lock on to energy ranging from the IR to the ultra-violet (UV) spectrum
- Sources: hot engine/exhaust plume, reflective sunlight or blocked UV contrast, aerodynamic heating of leading edge surfaces
- Fire and forget systems
Examples: SA-18, SA-9, SA-13
How is the adversary using his RW assets according to his doctrine?
RW aircraft systems are classified as light, attack, multi-role, transport, and reconnaissance aircraft and can be used in a variety of roles.
Examples: Mi-28 Havoc, Mi-24/35 Hind, KA-50 Hokum, Mi-17 Hip
How is the adversary using his FW assets according to his doctrine?
FW aircraft systems are classified as fighter/interceptor, strike, ground-attack, multi-role, bombers, special mission, or transport aircraft.
Examples: SU-34 Fullback, SU-25 Frogfoot, SU-24 Fencer
