  • Designed for operations at or beyond the FLOT
  • Not designed to initiate combat but to survive if engaged

Note:
Armored strike cars, light patrol vehicles and and light strike vehicles are also commonly employed in a reconnaissance role.

BRDM-2, EE-9, BRM-1K

What are the main characteristics of armored fighting vehicles?

A

Usually classified into one of two categories:
- Main battle tanks (MBT): tracked, heavily armored, gun 75 mm or more, 30 metric tons or more.
Examples: T-62, T-72, T-80

  • Light tanks: tracked, armored, gun 60 mm or more, lighter weight than MBT.
    Examples: PT-76, Type 63a.

What are the main characteristics of light armored fighting vehicles?

A

Armored personnel carrier (APC):
Intended to carry soldiers to the close combat zone, then dismount them for their commitment to the fight.

Infantry fighting vehicles (IFV):
Designed to fight with soldiers onboard, to carry the soldiers forward without dismounting them if possible, and to support them with direct fires if they do dismount.

Examples: BTR-80, MT-LB, BMP-3
