Syringe Systems Flashcards
Syringe system
Consist of hypodermic needle and syringe with luter lock
Syringe
Has cylindrical barrel and plunger
-rod like device within barrel that gently pulls back and fills syringe with blood
-syringe needle usually 21-23 gauge, 1-1.5 inches long, with attached re-sheathing device
-blood from syringe transferred to ETS tube using syringe transfer device
—placed on syringe after needle removed
-when filling tubes: must hold syringe transfer device vertically pointing downward to prevent contamination
Winged infusion
Blood collection set consist of 0.5-0.75 inch needle with plastic extension connected to 5-12 inch tubing
- tubing can be attached to syringe or evacuated tube holder
- smaller needle sizes use with caution-can cause hemolysis
- first draw from butterfly should be discarded, will cause air in tubing causing first evacuated tube to be under filled
Tourniquets
Elastic band wrapped around arm, restrict flow of blood.
- cause vein to expand to make it easier to puncture
- should not be used more than 1 minute
- single-use or multi-use
- multi-use should be disinfected
- used to locate and identify difficult veins
Vein viewer
Vein locating device use transillumination to identify vein under skin
- light projected on skin, hemoglobin in blood absorb light, making veins appear darker than surrounding tissues
- use when veins are difficult to identify or locate
