Body Systems Flashcards
1
Q
cardiovascular system
A
Carry oxygen, nutrients, waste products to and from cells of body by blood
2
Q
Lymphatic system
A
Circulate lymph
- fluid composed interstitial fluid and other elements
- lymph flows through lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes to filter out pathogens
- return interstitial fluid to circulatory system
- circulates white blood cells and fats from digestive system
3
Q
Respiratory system
A
- Takes in oxygen and expels carbon dioxide
- take in air nose, and mouth
- travels down trachea and bronchi into lungs
- lungs have millions of small alveoli - oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between blood and air
4
Q
Digestive system
A
Break down food for nutrients use by body’s cells
- enters mouth
- move to esophagus
- to stomach, where physically and chemically broken down
- to small intestine, where majority food is absorbed
- large intestine, which absorbs water
- to rectums / anus, where waste exits
- other organs include: liver / gallbladder / pancreas, manufactures substance needed for digestion
5
Q
Urinary system
A
- removes waste from body
- kidney filter waste from blood stream and create urine
- urine stored in bladder
- urethra excretes urine
6
Q
Skeletal system
A
- bones and joints
- provide support for body and contribute movement
- bones store some body nutrients, produce red and white blood cells
7
Q
Muscular system
A
Allow body to move, move blood and other substance through body
- skeletal muscle: voluntary muscle, attach to bones, move body
- smooth muscle: involuntary, create movement in digestive tract, blood vessels, reproductive system
- cardiac muscle: involuntary, contracts heart
8
Q
Immune system
A
- protect body from infection from foreign particles and organism
- skin / mucous membrane, physical barriers
- specialize white blood cells, destroy foreign substance
- adaptive immune system, recognize and respond to foreign substance once exposed to them
9
Q
Nervous system
A
- process external stimuli, send signal through body
- central nervous system: brain spinal cord, where information process and stored
- peripheral nervous system: small cells - neurons, transmit information through body using electrical signals
10
Q
Endocrine system
A
Collection of glands produce hormones
- chemicals regulate bodily processes
- pancreas: produce insulin and glucagon
- thyroid: regulate body metabolism
- pituitary: control growth and regulate other glands
- adrenal: produce cortisol and epinephrine, help body regulate stress and response to danger
11
Q
Reproductive system
A
Organs necessary for sexual reproduction
- males: testes, sperm produced. Urethra, carry sperm through penis
- females: ovaries, eggs produced. Uterus, fertilize egg develop
