Minor sentence
Lacking grammatical completeness
Simple sentence
A sentence with one clause, with a single subject
Compound
A sentence with more than one subject
Complex
A sentence containing a subordinate clause or clauses
Dependent clause
Adds additional content to the sentence, doesn’t make sense in its own
Independent Clause
A clause that makes sense on its own, as a simple sentence.
Subordinate clause
A clause that starts with a connective and is dependent on a main clause
“When it rang”= subordinate clause
“She answered the phone WHEN IT RANG.”
Embedded clause
A clause in a main clause, usually in commas
Adjectival Clause
A dependent clause which modifies a noun or pronoun
“Who is very beautiful.”
Adverbial clause
Clause that functions as an adverb, by modifying verbs, adverbs and adjectives by telling them why, when, where, how etc
Phrase
A small group of words
Asyndetic listing/ asyndeton
Listing with commas, leaving out connectives
Polysyndetic listing/Polysyndeton
Listing with connectives
