synaptic transmission/neurotransmission Flashcards
where is action potential triggered?
at the axon hillock
where does the action potential travel?
down the presynaptic neurone
what triggers vesicles?
the action potential
what do vesicles contain?
neaurotransmitters
once triggered, where do the vesicles move to?
they move towards the axon terminal and fuse with the membrane
once vesicles have fused with axon terminal what happens?
the neurotransmitters are released into the synapse
what is on the post synaptic neurone?
receptors
what are receptors designed to do?
attach to certain nearuotransmitters
if NT do not attach to a receptor what happens to them?
they are either destroyed by enzymes that break them down or reabsorbed by the pre synaptic neurone
when action potential reaches the axon terminal what happens?
calcium ions are released and flood the terminal
