why do we need to know freud?
as an alternativ explanantion for behaviours such as aggression
what is the theory based upon?
the idea that parts of the mind/psyche are in conflict with each other and what different things
what is the psyche?
the mind
what three parts is the psyche first split into?
the conscious
preconscious
unconscious
what is the conscious mind?
part of the mind we aware of of, contains current thoughts and feelings that we are thinking about at ant given moment
what is the preconscious mind/
thoughts that we are occasionally aware of e.g. remembered dreams or thoughts that have not been put into words
what is the unconscious?
part of the mind that is completely inaccessible
totally unaware about
contains instincts, fears, desires and memories that have been repressed
what was created to make contact with the unconscious?
the psychoanalysis
what are the other three parts of the psyche?
the id, ego and super ego
where about is the id?
in the conscious mind
what is the id?
it is made of urges and desires
it is not rational
very selfish
but not evil
when does the id develop?
as a baby
where is the ego?
in the unconscious?
when does the ego develop?
as a toddler
what is the ego
it is the reality principle
makes decisions
does not know right from wrong so feels no guilt
can understand some consequences so makes plans on how to get what the id wants in a rational way
what is the super ego?
it is the morality principle
tells ego what is right
when does the super ego develop

why can the super ego punish?
if it objects to the egos plans it will make go feel guilt which it fins unbearable so new ways of getting desires is made
how is super ego linked to criminals?
it is the part f your psyche that punishes yourself and can make you feel worthless
criminals commit cromes in order to be punished so have a strong ego
what is the eros?
the life instinct
what is the thanatos?
death instinct can lead to destruction
how is eros and thanatos linked to aggression?
if thanatos is stronger than eros then aggression will be formed
what is the oedipus complex?
idea that when you are a child you go through a psychological crisis in the fact that you have sexual desires for the opposite sex parent in your unconscious
feel guilt so hate same sex
what is repression method for oedipus complex?
identification which you copy same sex leading to gender and personality
how can catharsis lead to aggression?
it is an emotional release
