Synapses Flashcards
Synapse:
A point of contact between two cells
The two cells are:
The presynaptic cell and the postsynaptic cell
These may be 2 neurons, 2 muscle cells, or a neuron and a muscle cell
Presynaptic neuron:
Regulates action potential production in the postsynaptic neuron
presynaptic neuron-axon terminal is part of synapse
Postsynaptic neuron:
Postsynaptic terminal / postsynaptic membrane»_space;> plasma membrane closest to axon terminal
one presynaptic neuron can have several synapses with the same postsynaptic neuron
Where are synapses located?
At the cell body and dendrites of the postsynaptic neuron
Types of synapse:
-Electrical synapses
-Chemical synapses
Electrical synapses:
Axon terminal and postsynaptic neurons connected by gap junctions
directly produces an action potential
Electrical synapse are common when:
-a fast response is needed
-synchronized responses
Chemical synapses:
Axon terminal and postsynaptic are separated by the synaptic cleft
Ligand:
Gated ion channels
Synaptic Vesicles:
Stores neurotransmitters within the axon terminal prior to being released.
