swallowing Flashcards
if you lose fxn of the suprahyoid muscles, where will your problem in swallowing be
the cricopharyngeal sphincter
what are the anterior attachements of each of the constrictors
buccinator, hyoid, thyroid
where does food normally travel down the throat
through the piriform sinuses, around the epiglottis
oral preparation
reduces food to consistency to swallow (bolus formation); pleasure; soft palate moves anteriorly
oral stage
sequential contraction of tongue propels bolus
difference between triggering in young and old ppl
young ppl have an earlier trigger
pharyngeal stage
pressure generation (by tongue base), laryngeal valve, bolus exerts pressure as it enters sphincter
what causes lower sphincter (cricopharyngeal) to open?
mechanical pulling from upper sphincter (velopharyngeal)
what are the 4 stages and what controls them
oral prep and oral are voluntary, pharyngeal and esophageal are brainstem controlled
