Sustainable resource development (EIAs) Flashcards
What is sustainable development?
Development that reaches the needs of the present generation without compromising future generation’s ability to meet their own needs.
What is resource depletion?
Consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished.
What does the WWF predict about resources for the future?
We will need 2 planets to meet the demand for goods and services by 2030.
What are the two methods used to reduce resource depletion?
Supply side management
Demand side management
What is supply side management?
Finding ways to increase the supply
- more exploration
- more research (unconventional methods)
- more sustainable/alternative resources to replace the unsustainable ones.
What is demand - side management?
Decrease consumption of resources
- Changing lifestyle
- Developing tech
- Reduce population growth
- recycling
- regulatory frameworks - agenda 21 etc…
What is an EIA?
An environmental impact assessment.
Evaluates the environmental impacts and all socio-economic, cultural and human health costs of a certain proposal.
Decisions can be made will full knowledge of environmental outcome.
What is the LEOPOLD MATRIX?
A tool for determining likely environmental consequences of a project.
1 axis looks at the magnitude of the project’s consequences, the other looks at the significance of the environmental impact.
SInce when have EIAs been cemented in law in the EU?
Since 1999.
EIAs also look at what happens to a site post project.
Give an example of a project with an EIA and 3 points from its EIA
Zambia Lumwana Copper project.
Disturbance of nearly 9000 hectares
Commitment to employ locals
Surface water contamination from spillage and accidental release.
