Energy - Demand Components / Supply and Physical Geography: Flashcards
What percentage of energy is used globally in Industry (the largest user)?
55%
Why is hydraulic fracturing (fracking) not a viable energy option in the UK?
Not enough open space. Too close to human settlement.
Why are some people against unconventional resources?
Time and money put into developing these resources should be put into improving renewables.
How are wind turbines limited as a viable option in some areas?
Average annual wind speed of 30mph needed.
Very high winds can damage.
Lots of land needed.
Where is the area with the best potential for wind power in Europe?
UK :)
6 different air masses are meeting in the UK.
Why are solar panels not a viable energy option for all?
Need limited cloud cover.
Need long daylight hours
Smog, snow, rain can damage the panels.
SPAIN - good country
Why are Hydro-electric power dams not a viable option for all?
Need large flows of water
Need topographic changes - size and shape of drainage basin.
POWER = head x flow x gravity.
Brazil - perfect country for HEP power.
