Resource security key terminology :) Flashcards
Resource exploitation
Using natural resources to the fullest/ most profitable use.
Resource exploration
Searching an area with intention of finding and mapping natural resources.
Resource development
Making a source accessible to buy and use.
Uneven distribution
Concentration of some resources in certain areas - give national govs varying levels of territorial control over these.
Resource
An aspect of natural environment that can be used to cover human needs. Must be economically viable to extract.
What is RESOURCE SECURITY?
Ability of an organisation (on any scale e.g a country), to keep sustainable and reliable flows of resources to uphold and develop living standards.
Define RESOURCE SUSTAINABILITY
Using resources in a responsible way so that it does not jeopardise future resource security and the environment.
What is RESOURCE CONFLICT?
Disagreement over resources that can range from verbal to legal to tangible warfare forms.
What are STOCK resources?
Resources that are FINITE.
Can be used up.
Fossil fuels e.g coal.
What is a flow resource?
Renewable resources. Can be replaced. E.g solar energy.
What are the 3 categories when assessing presence of a reserve?
Measured reserves
Indicated reserves
Inferred reserves.
What is the difference between the types of categories used in assessing the presence of a reserve?
A MEASURED RESERVE is the most certain - a ‘confident estimation’ of quantity and quality of a reserve
MOST CERTAIN
An INDICATED RESERVE estimation that is confident - making it worthwhile to carry on evaluating economic viability of extracting the possible reserve.
An INFERRED RESERVE - Knowledge surrounding quantity, grade and quality is limited - may be inaccurate. LEAST CERTAIN.
What are ‘POSSIBLE RESOURCES’?
knowledge of areas that may have reserves that would be economically viable to explore in the future.
What is a RESOURCE FRONTIER?
A newly colonised region that has recently discovered a resource and extracting it for the first time.
Scotland is a resource frontier for England.
What is a RESOURCE PEAK?
When max production rate of a source is followed by a decline.
Varies at different scales (global to regional).
What does EIA stand for?
Environmental Impact Assessment.
What is an EIA?
Evaluation of possible ENVIRONMENTAL and SOCIAL consequences of a proposed resource project.
Usually accessible to the general public.
Helps involved organisations to reach a balanced arrangement.
What is the definition for ‘pattern of production’?
Distribution of where resources are produced.
Distribution is often uneven.
What is the ‘pattern of consumption’?
Distribution of where resources are consumed or used.
Often uneven at various scales.
Define ‘geopolitics’
A study looking at how International relations that are shaped by geographical factors.
Physical landscape,
Migration,
History :)
What are mineral ores?
sought after element that is found in a high concentration in a rock. It can be extracted.
e,g COPPER ORE
What is a primary energy resource?
Energy sources in raw state e.g oil, wind.
Unusable for energy unless mechanical action or heat is added.
What is the most sought after mineral?
Copper!
What is a SECONDARY ENERGY RESOURCE?
Primary energy resources that is converted into manufactured sources e.g petrol, electricity.
Define ‘NUCLEAR WASTE’:
A by-product from the generation of nuclear power.
It is hazardous, expensive and difficult to get rid of safely.
Define ACID RAIN:
Rain that is environmentally harmful and has an acid PH.
Formed by SULFUR DIOXIDE and NITROGEN OXIDE when they react with the water molecules in the atmosphere.
