Sustainability and Interdependence - Symbiosis Flashcards
1
Q
symbiosis
A
- intimate relationship between organisms of two different species that live in direct contact with one another
- these relationships are a result of coevolution
parasitism, mutalism, commensalism
2
Q
parasite
A
organism in parasitism which gains nutrients or energy from its host and the host is harmed as a result
e.g. mosquito, tape worm
3
Q
transmission of parasites
A
- direct contact - passed from host to host through physical contact
- release of resistant stages - some stages in the life cycle of an organism are resistant and able to survive adverse conditions until they come into contact with a new host
- use of a vector - intermediate organism that transports the parasite from one oraganism to another
4
Q
direct life cycle
parasitic life cycle
A
- the life cycle involves only one species of host
- common amongst parasites which feed on the outside of their host
5
Q
indirect life cycle
parasitic life cycle
A
- in the primary host the parasite undergoes sexual reproduction
- in the secondary host the parasite completes its life cycle and/or allows asexual reproduction to occur
increases chances of survival
6
Q
mutualism
A
both partner species involved in the interdependent relationship benefit
7
Q
coevolution
A
gradual change in parallel of two symbiotic organisms which increases their level of adaptation to suit a dependent or interdependent relationship
8
Q
interdependence
A
relationship that exists between the two partners involved in a mutualistic relationship
