Surgical Terms Flashcards
Anesthesia and the three types
Use of medication or substances to produce temporary loss of sensation consciousness, or pain relief. Three types: General, regional (arm or leg in targeted area) and local (near where the procedure will take place)
Hemostasis
Controlling bleeding during surgery promote optimal healing
Suture
Surgical threads used to close incisions or wounds after surgery there are absorbable and non absorbable.
Laparoscopy
Minimally invasive surgical technique creating tiny incisions in abdominal wall to insert a camera to observe and operate internal organs. Less surgical stress
Debridement
Removes diseased, damaged, or non-viable tissue from wounds or injuries. Promotes wound healing lower risk of infection.
Cauterization
Uses heat or chemicals to coagulate (change to solid) blood vessels and tissues closing them and halting bleeding.
Ligature
Thread used to tie off blood arteries or ducts during surgery to prevent bleeding or fluid escape. Regulating blood flow
Cannulation
Insertion of tube into a blood vessel or hollow organ to provide fluids drugs to aid drainage.
