Digestive System Flashcards
Sequence of digestive tract (GI)
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small, and large intestine
Sections of small intestine
Three sections: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Duodenum: charge of breakdown process. Jejunum and ileum: nutrition absorption into circulation.
Pancreas
Secrete digestive enzymes that break down in duodenum. Creates insulin governs sugar metabolism
Liver
Metabolize nutrients absorbed in small intestine; detoxifies potentially harmful chemicals.
Gall bladder
Collects and concentrates bile from the liver before releasing it into duodenum.
Colon function and what it’s made of
Function: waste processing. Made up of cecum, ascending (right) colon, transverse (across) colon, descending (left) colon, and sigmoid colon connecting to rectum
Ulcers
Lesions that occur on oesophageal, stomach, or small intestine linings often caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or long term use of ibuprofen
diverticular disease
Large intestine disease
Crohn’s disease
Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) irritates the intestines
Celiac disease
Autoimmune disorder that damages small intestine. Gluten causes this disease in humans
