Surgical Techniques Flashcards
What are the proper “surgical scrub” procedures practiced at the site of the skin incision?
- clip the hair from around the surgical site
- disinfect the area where the incision will be made (surgical field) by scrubing in a spiral (beginning where the incision will be made, working outward; clean –> dirty)
- use 3 alternating scrubs of betadyne and alcohol (leave final “paint” of betadyne solution)
- use a scalpel with apply digital pressure over the bald to make incision
- make the incision as a single decisive incision (not sawing motion)
Describe the approaches for a laparotomy (invasive) procedure.
- clip site
- surgical scrub
- incise skin with scalpel
- use rat-tooth forceps to handle skin and abdominal muscle
- elevate abdominal muscles
- cut along linea alba to open abdomen
Describe the approaches for a thoracotomy (invasive) procedure.
- insert endotracheal tube
- clip site
- surgical scrub
- incise skin with scalpel
- use rat-tooth forceps to handle skin and intercostal muscle
- cut intercostal muscle (between ribs)
note: loss of negative pressure in chest cavity results in collapse of lungs so need to manually infalt lungs or use a mechanical ventilator
What is image 2?
rat tooth forceps
what is image 4?
crushing forceps
what is image 3?
scissors
what is image 1?
scalpel
what is image 5?
hemostat
why may other instruments be inappropriate for the same use? ( scalpel vs scissors)
- scissors crush/damage tissue, delaying healing
- scalpel causes less trauma and results in a smoother wound margin, facilitating healing
why may other instruments be inappropriate for the same use? (rat tooth vs crushing forceps)
rat-tooth forceps prevent excessive crushing of cell
What are hemostats use for?
used for blunt dissection of subcutaneous tissue and for clamping off bleeding vessels
