surgical asepsis Flashcards
surgical (sterile)
strict use of sterile gloves and sterile equipment
sterile ONLY touches sterile: true or false
true
modified (sterile)
use of exam gloves and parts of sterile equipment (ex: gloves = medical; needle = surgical)
medical (clean)
use of clean exam gloves, clean supplies, etc. (hand hygiene)
concepts of surgical asepsis: 1-10
only a sterile object can touch another sterile object
the 1” border is considered contaminated of a sterile field
open exposure to sterile items/field is limited
never reach across a sterile field or object
never walk away or turn back on sterile field
sterile gloves, once donned, keep in sight at or above waist level - also don’t cross over/under each other
sterile items/table are set-up and used ONLY at or above waist level
sterile items expire
consider an object contaminated if you have any doubt of a break in sterility - package, integrity, etc.
sterile ONLY touches sterile
preparing for a sterile procedure: nurse’s role
determine allergy status to latex or antiseptic to be used, assess pain level and readiness before starting, and position patient, bed, etc., and lastly, gather sterile items, check expiration date and assess package integrity, place bedside table where the sterile field is always in sight, keep workspace waist level, and ensure work surface is clean & dry
opening a sterile field
remove outer package, touch only the 1” border and take first flap facing you and fold back/away, do not cross/reach over sterile field at any time when opening flaps, and items are typically packed/arranged in order of use
adding sterile items: points 1-3
- sterile items may be “flipped” on to the sterile field if it does not touch the outer 1” border
- items added demand strict awareness/observation
- if sterile gloves are on, a sterile transfer is acceptable
adding sterile fluids: points 1-3
- remove bottle cap and place face up on surface
- “lip” the bottle before pouring sterile fluids
- pour carefully on to the dressing or site without the bottle making contact or splashing
“lip” the bottle means:
remove a small amount before pouring into sterile receptacle
sterile gloving:
select correct size, check for latex sensitivity, pack integrity, hand hygiene, place package on a flat, clean, and dry surface, and open package without contamination
