16
Q

What is laddering?

A

Bowel loops lining up in an x-ray = sign of obstruction

17
Q

What appearance does bile stained vomit have?

A

Moss green colour (liver bile is yellow but changes once it passes through the stomach)

18
Q

How is a baby vomiting bile investigated?

A

Urgent upper GI contrast with follow through

19
Q

Why may a baby start vomiting bile?

A

Has malrotation of bowel with volvulus

20
Q

What causes malrotation with a volvulus?

A

Bowel is in wrong place = duodenum has not gone over to left side

21
Q

When do infants with malrotation with a volvulus present?

A

From within first month to first year of life

22
Q

Why is the bowel at risk of ischaemic death from malrotation with volvulus?

A

Midgut supplied by SMA = if bowel in wrong place then mesentery narrows and may twist, cutting off blood supply to the gut
