What is cerebral palsy?
A group of disorders of development of movement and posture that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances in the developing brain
What are some issues attributed to cerebral palsy?
Gross/fine motor delay, salivation, pain, high/low tone, swallowing difficulties, social isolation, independent living, finances, toileting issues, seizures, stigma, speech
What is periventricular leukomalacia?
Change in white matter of brain due to unknown insult
What are physios experts in?
Holistic physiotherapy
What is the aim of child physios?
To maximise the child’s physical ability, opportunity and independence
How may gross motor function be assessed?
ROM, muscle length, tone, reflexes, movement patterns, symmetry/deformity, any equipment being used
What are some targeted interventions done by physios?
Stretch and strengthen exercises, tone management (Botox), equipment (walker, gaiters), hydrotherapy, gait re-education
Why are K walkers given to children with high tone?
Child will be tight and flexed = walker forces child to have more extended posture
What do AFOs do?
Try and keep foot and ankle at 90 degrees and stretches the TA
What are children with cerebral palsy at increased risk of?
Hip dislocations and spinal scoliosis = die to issues with standing and weight bearing
What does occupational therapy allow patients to do?
Participate in daily life to improve their health and well being
What are occupations in regards to children?
Tasks and activities that children perform in their daily life
What do speech and language therapists NOT help with?
Improving elocution
