Surface anatomy Flashcards
Which vertebrae does the highest point of the iliac cret pass through? Why is this clinically important?
L3-L4 Used for lumber puncture
At which vertebral level does the spinal cord end?
L1/2
At which hip bony point does the iliac crest end?
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS)
Where can you find the pubic symphysis?
midline between the pubic bones
Where can you find the pubic tubercle?
Thumb width(2.5cm) away from pubic symphysis
Where can you find the inguinal ligament?
Connects ASIS and pubic tubercle
Where will you find the femoral artery?
Within the femoral triangle just below the mid-inguinal point
Where is the femoral nerve, vein and head in relation to the femoral pulse?
Vein-Just medial Nerve- lateral (2 fingers width) Head- just posterior
What part of our body do we sit on?
Ischeal tuberosity
Where is the safest place for a gluteal injection
Upper, lateral quadrant
Where is the sciatic nerve located?
halfway between greater trochanter and ischial tuberosity
Where is your greater trochanter?
10cm below the iliac crest
How to find the location for a sciatic nerve block?
Draw a line between the greater trochanter and the posterior superior iliac spine 2nd line 4 cm perpendicular to the midpoint caudally.
What is the tibial tuberosity?
Attachment of the patella ligament
Where can you find the head of the fibular?
level with superior part of tibial tuberosity
Where can you find the hamstring tendons?
seen and felt at superior borders of popliteal fossa
Where will you find the posterior tibial artery?
halfway between medial malleolus and calcaneal tendon.
Where will you find the dorsalis pedis?
lateral to the extensor tendon of the big toe (extensor hallucis longus) on top of the navicular
How to measure the true leg length?
ASIS to distal tip of medial malleolus on both sides.
Location of the dermatones L1-S2?
L1 inguinal region
L2 upper thigh
L3 over the patella at the knee
L4 medial aspect of leg
L5 dorsum of foot (big toe)
S1 sole of foot and 5th toe (little toe)
S2 over the popliteal fossa

Nerve roots for quadriceps reflex?
L3-L4
Nerve roots for achilles reflex?
S1,S2
How to locate the medial epicondyle?
Flex arm- the part that sticks out
Where can you find the superficial veins of the arm (cephalic, basilic, median cubital)
Cubital fossa
Which epicondyle is larger, lateral or medial?
Medial
Where is the ulnar nerve located
Behind the medial epicondyle
Where will you find the radial and ulnar styloid process?
Either side of your wrist
Where will you find the head of the ulnar?
Dorsal aspect of the wrist media to ulna styloid process
What makes the borders for the anatomical snuff box?
Tendon of extensor pollicis longus
Tendon of extensor pollicis brevis
What does the median nerve lay deep to (underneath)?
Tendon of Palmaris longus located in the middle of the wrist

What do the landmarks on this image indicate?

Go through the dermatoms of the arm
- C4 top of shoulder
- C5 over deltoid
- C6 over the thumb
- C7 middle finger
- C8 little finger
- T1 medial forearm
- T2 axillary skin
