Introduction
. The regulation of 1773 charter act empowered the British crown to establish the Supreme court at Calcutta by issuing a charter 1774.
. The charter act of 1774 abolished suspended provisions of charter act 1753 and abolished mayor’s court at Calcutta.
Composition of supreme court :
. The charter act of 1774 made provisions for the appointment and removal of judges and the jurisdiction of court,powers and functions of the court .
. The supreme court consisted of three puisne judges .
. Persons who were barristers for less than 5 yrs standing could be appointed by the British crown and we’re to hold office during the pleasure of the crown.
. It was a court of record .
. It could regulate it’s own rules but can be approved rejected and modified by the king’s council .

. The supreme court was to nominate three persons yearly to the governor general who were to be select one of them as sheriff.
. It was the primary duty of the sheriff to execute the orders of the court and also detain the imprisoned who are accused .
. The supreme ourt also had authorised attorney and advocates.
. The supreme could appoint subordinate officers but the salary should be approved by the governor general and council.
