Supportive care of Farm Animals Flashcards
What is the common cause of diarrhoea in adult cows?
alkalosis
What is the common cause of diarrhoea in calves?
acidosis
What maintenance value is used for lactating animals?
100 ml/kg/day
What are the signs of different stages of dehydration int the cow?
mild (4-7%)= 2-3 secs skint tent, 2-3 secs CRT, moisty shiny mm, eyeball slightly recessed
moderate(8-10%)- obviously sunken eyeall, 4-5 sec CRT, dull and tacky mm
severe (10+%)- severely sunken eyeballs, dry mm, cold, collapsed
How do you treat an acidotic cow with fluids?
IV - use lactated fluid and/or Bicarb spike (after a few bags if no improvement), SLOWLY
How do you treat an alkalosis cow with fluids?
IV - avoid lactated fluids
Oral - spike with anions (Cl-) NOT ACID
( -ve charge so draws H+ from cells into blood)
When might you use hypertonic saline (7.2%) and why?
Cow in shock and need to increase BP. Salt solution so draws water into blood increasing the circulatory volume.
Must follow up with normal fluids or oral fluids
Name some causes of a down cow
- anaemia
- toxic mastitis
- severe lameness
- septicaemia
- severe acidosis
- milk fever
- fracture or dislocation
What fluid therapy could be given to a cow suffering from acute rumen acidosis?
Antacid
What fluid therapy could be given to a cow suffering from a caesarean section?
Fresh cow 500, and glycerol plus
What fluid therapy can be given to cow suffering from dehydration or endotoxaemic shock?
restore
What fluid therapy can be given to a cow suffering from diarrhoea caused by mycotoxins or bacterial infection?
Charbon fluide and restore
What fluid therapy can be given to a cow suffering from inappetence in early lactation?
Off feed
What fluid therapy can be given to a cow to reduce the risk of ketosis?
fresh cow 500
