Supplemental Oxygen Flashcards
What is a cannula?
a piece of plastic tubing that runs under the nose and administers oxygen. Good up to 18000ft.
What is a Diluter Demand system?
it supplies oxygen only when the user inhales, provides a tight seal and can be used up to 40,000ft.
What is a pressure demand system?
supplies oxygen under pressure to the users lungs, at cabin pressure altitudes above 34000ft but can be used up to 40000ft.
What is a continuous flow system?
typically provided for passengers, has a reservoir bag that collects oxygen from the system when the user is exhaling, which helps the aspiratory rate when the user inhales.
What is a Electrical Pulse Demand system?
delivers oxygen by detecting an individuals inhalation effort and only provides oxygen on the inhalation portion. Can reduce the oxygen use by 50 percent.
What is time of useful consciousness at 20,000ft?
30 minutes.
What is time of useful consciousness at 30,000ft?
1 to 2 minutes.
What is time of useful consciousness at 40,000ft?
15 to 20 seconds.
What are the oxygen regulations for unpressurized aircraft?
12500 to 14000ft: minimum flight crew is required to use oxygen for that part of the flight lasting longer than 30 minutes.
Above 14000ft: minimum required flight crew must use oxygen the entire time.
Above 15000ft all occupants must be supplied with oxygen.
What are the oxygen regulations for pressurized aircraft?
Above FL250 each occupant must have a 10 minute supply of oxygen.
Above FL350 one pilot must wear an oxygen mask, unless there are two pilots at the controls and both of them have access to a quick donning mask and they are operating between FL350 and FL410.
What is a quick donning mask?
a mask that can be placed on the face using one hand from the ready position within 5 seconds.
Why is aviation oxygen different than normal oxygen?
Aviation oxygen is stored in green tanks and have a lower moisture content. This is so they do not freeze at altitude.
What FAR regulates oxygen requirements?
FAR 91.211
