What is a superpower?
A nation with the means to project its power and influence anywhere in the world and to be a dominant global force
What is a hyperpower?
An unchallenged superpower that is dominant in all aspects of power
E.g. British Empire
What are examples of hard power?
-Military
-Political
-Economic
What are examples of soft power?
-Cultural influence
-Access to natural resources
What is economic power?
-Allows a nation to control trade
-Invest in a strong military force
-Exploit natural resources
-Can own the debt of other countries
What is military power?
-Threaten or invade other countries
-Achieve geopolitical goals
What is political power?
Being able to influence other countries in a way that suits their desires or matches their political systems
What is cultural power?
Projecting a nation’s cultural values on others can change the way the populations think and align their ideology with the superpower’s culture
What is resource power?
Physical resources:
-Develop economy
-Develop economic power through trade
-Can have power over other countries if they rely on the country for resources
What is a unipolar world?
One country dominates
E.g. USA or British Empire
What is a bipolar world?
Where there are two main superpowers with opposing ideas and ideologies
E.g. USA and USSR during the cold war
What is a multipolar world?
Where there are several powers and emerging powers competing for power and global influence
What is emerging power?
An emerging country in a state that has a developing economy or government and has large projected growth
What are the successes of colonial power?
-Railway lines built through the country used to transport goods and army quickly
-Spread of the English language allowing outsourcing services and participation in business
-Improved education for all colonial states
