Superchargers And Turbochargers Flashcards
What happens to the volumetric efficiency when forced induction is introduced ?
Increases
What is a supercharger ?
Mechanical device which purpose is to provide fresh air to an engine at higher pressure, which results in higher compression on the compression stroke
What is a supercharger driven by?
Driven by the engine in either a gear, belt or chain drive
What are super chargers used in?
- powerful engines with high rpm
- modern engines to boost fuel economy
- less complex and cheaper to increase power
What are turbo chargers?
Not driven by engine
Utilises waste power from the exhaust
Rotates in excess of 150000 rpm
Capable of over boosting the intake
What are the 2 types of turbo chargers ?
- pulse
- constant pressure
What controls the air coming into the turbo?
West gate actuator
Why do you need an intercooler?
Cools the air to 50-60 degrees and reduces its density making it more volumetrically efficient
