Air Intake System Flashcards
What is the purpose of an air filter
Filter the air and protect fine mechanical parts from wear or blockage
What is the purpose of a silencer
Silence the intake noise of the engine
What will poorly maintained air filters cause ?
Loss In power
Excessive exhaust fumes
High fuel consumption
Excessive engine wear
What is the purpose of an inlet manifold ?
Deliver clean and evenly distributed supply of air to the correct cylinder at the correct temperature and density
What does the inlet manifold improve ?
Combustion and scavenging
What are some cold engine inefficiencies ?
Fuel sticks to cold manifold
Extra fuel used
Increased emissions
What does electric or water heating elements on intake manifolds improve ?
Cold weather starting
What is positive crankcase ventilation?
Utilises the vacuum in the inlet manifold to draw fumes from the crankcase and pass them to the engine to be burned in the combustion process
What is the PCV valve?
Adjusts the flow of fumes taken in by the engine at varying speeds
Reduces backfire
How does open ventilation work?
Drawing air in through the ventilated oil filter cap and directing crankcase fumes to the intake system
How does closed ventilation work?
Taking air in through the air filter to a sealed oil filer cap and directing crankcase fumes into the engine air intake to be taken into the combustion chamber
