Sugars Flashcards
what is the scientific name for a sugar
a saccharide (one sugar means monosaccharide)
what are the five monosaccharides?
Glucose, galactose fructose ( all hexose- has six carbons) Ribose, deoxyribose (pentose-five carbons)
how do we group monosaccharides?
based on the amount of carbons atoms
what are the groups called?
triose-3 carbon atoms, tetrose-4 carbon atoms, pentose-5 carbon atoms, hexose-6 carbon atoms
what’s the general formula for monosaccharides?
CnH2nOn
what ar the two glucose isomers and what are the differences?
a-glucose (has hydroxl groups on the same side), b-glucose (has hydroxl groups on opposite sides)
what are two sugars joined togethere?
Disaccharides
what are types of disaccharides?
maltose (glucose/glucose), Lactose (glucose /galactose), sucrose (glucose/fructose)
how are disaccharides formed?
By the condensation of two monosaccharides
what are the bonds for sugars?
glycosidic bonds (covalent bond)
how do you perform the test for benedict test for reducing sugars?
- add equal volume of benedict to food sample.
2.place in a water bath. - if reducing sugar is present it appears red, if not present it appears blue
