phenylpiperidine opioid agonist
What are the uses of Sufentanil?
- analgesic adjunct in maintenance of balanced anesthesia
- can be used as primary anesthetic agent for induction and maintenance
- can be used in management of chronic severe pain with PCP or transdermal patches
What is the MOA of sufentanil?
binds to opioid receptors particularly the mu receptors, throughout the central and peripheral nervous sytem
- produces dose related attenuation of catecholamine release, especially NE
- increase of pain threshold, alteration of pain perception, and inhibition of ascending pathways
How is Sufentanil metabolized?
Liver and small intestine: major sites of biotransformation
What compartment model describes the distribution of Sufentanil?
3 compartment model– highly lipid soluble
What is the potency of Sufentanil as compared to Fentanyl?
5 - 10 times more potent than Fentanyl
What is the onset of action of Sufentanil?
1 - 3 minutes
What is the elimination 1/2 life of Sufentanil?
164 minutes in adults; approximately 80% of the dose administered is excreted within 24hrs, and 2% eliminated unchanged

- Hypotension
- Bradycardia
