- analgesic adjunct in maintenance of balanced anesthesia
- can be used as primary anesthetic agent for induction and maintenance
- can be used in management of chronic severe pain with PCP or transdermal patches
What is the MOA of sufentanil?
binds to opioid receptors particularly the mu receptors, throughout the central and peripheral nervous sytem
- produces dose related attenuation of catecholamine release, especially NE
- increase of pain threshold, alteration of pain perception, and inhibition of ascending pathways
How is Sufentanil metabolized?
Liver and small intestine: major sites of biotransformation
What compartment model describes the distribution of Sufentanil?

What is the onset of action of Sufentanil?
1 - 3 minutes
What is the elimination 1/2 life of Sufentanil?
164 minutes in adults; approximately 80% of the dose administered is excreted within 24hrs, and 2% eliminated unchanged
Is Sufentanil protein bound?
approx 93% protein bound
What is the Vd of Sufentanil?
2.86 L/kg

- Quinidine
- Verapamil
What drugs enhance the magnitude and duration of CNS and CV effects when administered with Sufentanil?
- Barbiturates
- Tranquilizers
- Other opioids
- GAs
- CNS depressants
How should dosing of Sufentanil be planned?
according to ideal body weight, physical status, underlying pathological conditions, use of other drugs, and type of surgical procedure and anesthesia
When should you reduce the dose of Sufentanil?
elderly, debilitated, and neonates
What is the analgesia bolus dose of Sufentanil?
0.1 - 1 mcg/kg
What is the induction/maintenance dose of Sufentanil for minor procedures?
