Subtle Anatomy (Energy Systems) Flashcards
What is Subtle Anatomy?
Subtle Anatomy is the study of the interactions of the different energy systems in the body. Just like with subtle energy, various cultures across the world have different ways of describing the body’s energy systems.29 July 2020
What is Prana in Sanskrit?
Prana in Sanskrit means: Vital Life Force.
What is Prana?
- Prana is the universal principle of energy or force.
- Understanding what prana is and how it works is like being given a key that can unlock new improved levels of health and well-being - on the inside and out.
What is Nadis in Sanskrit?
Nadis in Sanskrit means: Tube, channel, flow
What is Nadis?
Nadis are little pathways in the subtle body, energy channels/currents.
MAIN ROADS for prana
How many Nadis are there?
There are 72,000 Nadis in the Subtle Body.
What are the 3 MAIN Nadis in the Subtle Body?
Remember there are 72K total.
- Pingala Nadi
- Ida Nadi
- Sushumna Nadi
Which way does Pingala Nadi move?
1 of the 3 MAIN Nadis in the Subtle Body
Pingala Nadi moves to the right in the subtle body.
Memory Aid: “Pingala Nadi is always right.”
Which way does Ida Nadi move?
1 of the 3 MAIN Nadis in the Subtle Body
Ida Nadi moves to the left in the subtle body.
Memory Aid: “Ida Nadi loves the left.”
Which way does Sushumna Nadi move?
1 of the 3 MAIN Nadis in the Subtle Body
Ida Sushumna Nadi moves from the base of the spine to the top of the head in the subtle body.
Only Shushumna extends to the 7th chakra (The Crown)
Memory Aid: “Shushumna runs top to bottom.”
Which two of the 3 MAIN Nadis in the Subtle Body go only go to the 6th Chakras?
Pingala Nadi
and
Ida Nadi
Which Nadi extends to the 7th Chakra (the Crown)?
Shushumna Nadi. Only Shushumna extends to the 7th chakra (The Crown).
How can you describe the way Ida and Pingala pathways function in the Subtle Body?
Ida Nadi pathway is on the left side of the subtle body. It winds around Shushumna Nadi’s central line, in a half oval shape that joins with it’s mirror image on the right (Pingala) to make a whole oval at energy channels/Chakras 1-6 but not 7. Only Shushumna extends to the crown (chakra 7)
Ida Nadi pathway is on the left side of the subtle body. It winds around Shushumna Nadi on the left side of the body from the base of the body/Chakra 1/The Muladhara/,Root Chakra, through to the 6th Chackra/Ajna/Brow or third eye chakra. Ida Nadi on the left side of the body joins with Pingala on the right side of the body, together each of their halves make a full oval that figure 8’s from the base of the spine to the brow.
How can you describe the way Ida and Pingala pathways function in the Subtle Body?
Pingala Nadi pathway is on the right side of the subtle body. It winds around Shushumna Nadi’s central line, in a half oval shape that joins with it’s mirror image on the left (Ida) to make a whole oval at energy channels/Chakras 1-6 but not 7. Only Shushumna extends to the crown (chakra 7)
Pingala Nadi (RT) and Ida Nadi (LFT) right and left sides to the figure 8 shape wind upwards from spine to brow (Chakras 1-6) around the Shushumna Nadi central line which runs from charas 1-7/base of spine to crown.
What are Chakras?
Chakras are energy centers which are arranged vertically along Shushumna Nadi (vertical central line from base1-crown7) and at the meeting points for Pingala Nadi (RT) and Ida (LFT)
What are Chakras?
Chakras are energy centers which are arranged vertically along Shushumna Nadi (vertical central line from base1-crown7) and at the meeting points for Pingala Nadi (RT) and Ida (LFT)
What are Chakras?
Energy CENTERS (oval shapes)
ROUNDABOUTS FOR PRANA
What are Nadis?
Energy CHANNELS
MAIN ROADs for prana
Vertical central line Shushumna Nadi/Chakras 1-7
Rt or Lft side of figure 8 vertical spiral/chakras 1-6
What are Nadis?
Energy CHANNELS
Vertical central line Shushumna Nadi/Chakras 1-7
Rt or Lft side of figure 8 vertical spiral/chakras 1-6
RT side of the figure 8 is Pingala Nadi.
LFT side of the figure 8 is Ida Nadi.
Pingala Nadi and Ida Nadi two halves of the body join to spiral around Shushumna Nadi (midline/midsagittal) from chakras 1-6 base of spine to brow.
What do Chakras represent?
Chakras represent levels of consciousness.
What does each chakra have?
Each chakra has a:
- Bija mantra
- Colour
- Element
- Sense.
- Specific Asana to support balance
Each chakra has a Bija mantra, colour, element, sense, and specific Asana.
Each chakra has a specific Asana practice to support its balance
What does Grantis mean in Sanskrit?
The Sanskrit word forranthi means “knot” or “doubt”. it also means “an especilly difficult knot to untie.”
What do Granthi do?
What do Granthi prevent prana (vital life force/energy force) from moving freely up Sushumna Nadi (midline vertical/CHtail1-7crown)
What is GranthiS?
What is GranthiS are energy knots or blocks in our personality where the energy and consciousness interact and manifest
What is the central pathway?
Shushumna Nadi/vertical straight energy channel from CH1Tail - CH7Crown.
What are the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (Shushumna Nadi/vertical straight energy channel from CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Brahma Granthi (1st knot)
- Vishnu Granthi (2nd knot)
- Rudra Granthi (3rd knot)
What do Granthis do in the shushumna nadi (vertical straight energy channel from CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
Prevent the full ascent of the serpent power (kundalini)
The three main knots prevent the free flow of prana (energyforce/vital life force) alogn the chakras (energy centers) and prevent the arising of kundalini (energy at base of spine/coiled snake)
What is the 1st knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Brahma Granthi (1st knot)
What is the 2nd knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Vishnu Granthi (2nd knot)
What is the 3rd knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Rudra Granthi (3rd knot)
WHERE is the 1st knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Brahma Granthi (1st knot)
- Lowest knot
- Covers the areas of MULADHARA & SWADHISTHANA CHAKRAS
- Perineal knot
WHERE is the 2nd knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Vishnu Granthi (2nd knot)
- Covers the area between MANIPURA, ANAHATA & VISHUDDHA CHAKRAS
- Naval Knot
WHERE is the 3rd knot in the 3 common blockages in the central pathway (sushumna CH1Tail-CH7Crown)?
- Rudra Granthi (3rd knot)
- Covers area of Ajna & Sahasrara chakras
- Forehead knot
Where is 1. Brahma Granthi (1st knot)?
Perineal knot
Where is Vishnu Granthi (2nd knot)
Naval Knot
Where is Rudra Granthi (3rd knot)
Forehead knot
What are Bandhas (energy locks)?
Bandhas are the HATHA Yoga method for untying Granthis (knots, blockages in central pathway) in the sushumna nadi ( vertical energy channel current)
Sanskrit meaning for Bandha?
The Sanskrit meaning for Bandha is to lock, to hold, to tighten.
How many principle bandhas are there?
there are 3 principle bandhas and a fourth that ties them all together
