6
Q

mechanisms of alcohol withdrawal ?

A

chronic alcohol consumption enhances GABA mediated inhibition in the CNS (similar to benzodiazepines) and inhibits NMDA type glutamate receptors

withdrawal does the opposite (decreased GABA inhibition and increased NMDA glutamate transmission)

Q

describe how to prevent withdrawal symptoms when withdrawing from benzodiazepines.

A

they should only be prescribed for short duration (2-4 weeks)

reduce dose by 1/8 every 2 weeks

if patient is struggling

  • prescribe same dose of diazepam
  • reduce the dose by 2mg - 2.5mg every 2-3 weeks
17
Q

mechanism of cocaine ?

A

blocks the uptake of dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin
