Subconjunctival haemorrhage pathophysiology
When a small blood vessels within the conjunctiva ruptures and releases blood into the space between the sclera and the conjunctiva
When do subconjunctival haemorrhages occur
After episodes of strenuous activity such as:
- heavy coughing
- weight lifting
- straining when constipated.
Can also be caused by trauma to the eye
Risk factors for subconjunctival haemorrhage
Hypertension
Blood thinners such as warfarin
Bleeding disorders - thrombocytopenia
Presentation of subconjunctival haemorrhage
Painless
Patch of bright red eye
No visual changes
Management of subconjunctival haemorrhage
Resolve spontaneously without any treatment.
Control HTN and medication
If there is a foreign body sensation lubricating eye drops can help with symptoms
How long does subconjunctival haemorrhage take to resolve
2 weeks - 4 weeks
