Posterior Vitreous Detachment Flashcards
Role of the vitreous humour
Gel inside the eye that maintains the structure of the eyeball and keeps the retina pressed on the choroid
Vitreous body with age
The vitreous body is made up of collagen and water.
Becomes less firm and less able to maintain its shape with age
Posterior vitreous detachment
Vitreous gel comes away from the retina
Who commonly gets vitreous detachment
Older patients
Presentation of vitreous detachment
Can be asymptomatic
- Painless
- Spots of vision loss
- Floaters
- Flashing lights
Management of posterior vitreous detachment
No treatment is necessary.
Symptoms will improve as the brain adjusts
What can posterior vitreous detachment predispose to
Retinal tears and retinal detachment.
Investigations for posterior vitreous detachment
exclude and assess the risk of a retinal tear or detachment with a thorough assessment of the retina:
- fundoscopy
