Refractive errors Flashcards
Optical components
Cornea - fixed
Lens - variable
Axial length
Accommodation reflex
- More light refraction from near objects
- Ciliary muscle fibres contract
- Suspensory ligament relaxes
- Lens becomes thicker
Types of refractive error
Myopia - short sighted
Hypermetropia - long sigted
Astigmatism
Astigmatism
Different shape of eyeball
Causes of myopia
Long axial length with an average cornea (common)
or
High power cornea (steeper) with an average axial length
Myopia pathophysiology
Light focus falls short of retina
How to correct myopia
Requires a concave lens to correct
Hypermetropia pathophysiology
Light focus is past the retina
Causes of hypermetropia
Axial length too long with normal corneal power (common)
or
Corneal power is weaker (flatter) with normal axial length
How to correct hypermetropia
Convex lens
Astigmatism
Anatomical variation where the cornea has 2 axis of curvature giving 2 powers and 2 foci
Presbyopia
Loss of elasticity of the lens due to old age therefore less accommodation
Can’t see short distance
