Studying the Damaged Brain Flashcards
1
Q
Define
Lesions
A
Any structural damage to white or grey matter
2
Q
Define
Neoplasms
A
Tumors, growths that do not have a functional purpose
3
Q
What are the
Three Main Types of Tumors
A
- Gliomas
- Meningiomas
- Metastatic
4
Q
Define
Gliomas
A
Abnormal reproduction of glial cells
5
Q
Define
Meningiomas
A
Originate in the meninges, the protective membranes around the brain
6
Q
Define
Metastatic
A
Originate outside the brain, e.g. breast cancer or
other malignant tissue travels to the brain
7
Q
Angiography
A
- To evaluate circulatory system and diagnose disruptions.
- Dye is injected into vertebral or carotid artery, then X-rayed.
8
Q
List some
Degenerative Brain Disorders
A
Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, Schizophrenia
9
Q
Why is brain damage due to TBI usually more severe in the front?
A
There are sharp edges inside the skull in the orbitofrontal region
10
Q
Define
Single Dissociations
A
- requires a minimum of 2 groups & 2 tasks
- when groups differ in performance on one task, but not the other
- provides weak evidence for functional specialization because the 2 tasks could be different w/r/t group sensitivity
11
Q
Define
Double Dissociations
A
- requires a minimum of 2 groups and 2 tasks
- when one group is impaired on one task and the other group is impaired on the other task
- when one experimental manipulation changes activation in one region and a different manipulation produces changes in a different region
- strong evidence that performance differences reflect actual group differences
