Study unit 2.2 Heredity + Behavior Flashcards
Chromosomes
Threadlike strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules that carry genetic information
Genes
Biochemical messengers or DNA segments that serve as the key functional units in hereditary transmission.
Polygenic traits
Influenced by more than one pair of genes
Identical twins (monozygotic)
A single egg that splits for unknown reasons, they share the same genetic blueprint and have a 100% overlap.
Fraternal (dizygotic)
Two separate eggs are fertilized simultaneously, and they have a 50% overlap.
Evolution
Gene pool in a population changes gradually due to selection pressures.
Adaptation
Inherited characteristics increased in the population because it helped solve a problem of survival or reproduction during the time it emerged.
