Study frågor 9 Gender Flashcards
Differentiate between gender and sex.
the differences is that the sex is referring to the biological differences such as hormones and sex chromosomes
while gender is something society labels and could differ from culture to culture but is usually what is considers masculine and feminine things
Are there gender-based psychological differences?
Yes, men and women have different levels of hormons. Men have been known to be more aggressiv the women and men tend to be better att spatial abilities. But its hard to say their are biological differences and the differences between the genders that are not biological they could actually be something that the culture and environment has evoked and not something that really has to do with the gender.
How do cognitive perspective explain these differences
Cognitiv: gender –role socialization and culture provides us with gender schemas.
How do behaviourist perspective explain these differences
Behavior: they believe that gender type personalities arise from the same processes as everything, its learned by modelling , conditioning and reinforcement.
How do interpersonal perspective explain these differences
Interpersonal: stereotypes , social rolls and norms affect our behaviour. And social situations and how we are brought up thinking about the genders.
How do psychoanalytic perspective explain these differences
Psychoanlytic : biological theory it assumes that diffricecs in traits arise from emotional responses to differences in physical structures (pussy and dick)
What research evidence does or does not support the reality of gender based personality characteristics?
the biggest differences are motor behaviour , sexual behaviour and attitude.
There are small differences in aggression and spatial perception and mental rotation.
Explain the modern way of looking at masculinity and femininity.
The modern way is to look at the biological differences such as hormones, or brain structure. We don’t look at differences in the same way any more, because we are trying to reach a more equal society. We understand that the differences we usually see are because of social expectations and social structures in our society and not because of the sex itself
How can gender theory complement an individual personality theory
gender theories can give us a understanding on why there are differences in traits between the genders.
What is “doing gender”?
Doing gender is something that Dan Zimmerman came up with. It’s the idea that sex is not a trait. But because we live in a world where we are constantly socially trained with behaviour that emphasis what is femininity and what is masculinity the sex(gender) has now become a product of that. Its not genetically but rather a social construct
Explain an “intersectional” perspective
the intersectional perspective they talk about how power structures effect other power structures and that causes discrimination, inequality and depressions.
Power structures can be, race, sexuality, social economic status and gender for exemple.
