Structures And Properties Flashcards
What are the properties for a molten ionic compound?
High-temperature provides energy to overcome strong attractive forces between ions therefore the ions move freely so will conduct electricity.
What are the properties for an ionic solid?
The ions are in a fixed lattice so can only vibrate in a fixed position therefore they do not conduct electricity.
What are the properties for an ionic compound in a solution?
The water molecules separate ions from the lattice so the ions are then free to move so will conduct electricity.
What can you say about the melting and boiling points in simple molecules?
They are low.
Why can graphite conducts electricity and diamond can’t?
Because graphite is bonded to 3 carbon so has one free electron whereas diamond is bonded to 4 so has no free electrons.
Why is graphite slippery?
Because it has weak intermolecular forces between its layers.
Why can metals be bent and shaped when forces are applied?
Because the layers in pure metal atoms are weak and can slide over each other.
Why do metals conduct electricity and heat?
Because they have delocalised electrons.
