Rates Of Reaction Flashcards
How does the surface area of asolid affect its rate of reaction?
If a reactant is chopped up into smaller pieces or powder the rate of reaction will increase because there will be more frequent successful collisions.
What are 4 ways that a rate of reaction can be increased?
Temperature
Catalyst
Concentration or pressure
Surface area
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
As temperature increases particles gain more energy which mean they move faster which means there is more frequent successful collisions.
How does increasing the concentration/pressure speed up the rate of reaction?
Increasing the concentration means there are more particles of the reactants moving around in the same volume, because they are more crowd together the more frequent successful collisions are made.
How does a catalyst speed up the rate of reaction?
Tacitus lower the activation energy.
Why are catalysts often cheaper than increasing the temperature?
Because even though catalyst of the very expensive because they are made of precious metals it is cheaper cheaper to pay for the energy needed for higher temperatures or pressures.
