Electrolysis Flashcards
What is the positive electrode called and what moves towards it?
Anode and negatively charged ions move there.
What does electrolysis do?
It uses an electrical current to breakdown a substance made of ions into a simpler substance.
What is the negative electrode called and what moves towards it?
Anode and positively charged ions move there.
What happens when the ions reach the electrode?
They can loose there charge and be deposited as elements.
What is (l)?
Liquid
What is (g)?
Gas
What is (aq)?
Dissolved in water.
What is (s)?
Solid.
How can substances with very high melting points be electrolysed?
Some dissolve in water so there ions can then move freely.
How do you negatively charged ions become neutral atoms in electrolysis?
They lose electrons.
How do you positively charged ions become neutral atoms in electrolysis?
They gain electrons.
What is gaining electrons is called?
Reduction.
What is losing electrons called?
Oxidation.
Why is electrolysis in water more complicated?
Because water contains ions.
What is brine?
Sodium chloride solution.
