Structure of the Neuromuscular Junction Flashcards
What do end bulbs contain?
Vesicles containing acetylcholine
How many receptors do the motor end plates contain?
30 million Ach receptors
What are transverse tubules?
Invigilators of the sarcolemma into the centre of the cell
What are the transverse tubules filled with?
Extracellular fluid
What do transverse tubules do?
Carry action potentials into cells
How are mitochondria lined up in transverse tubules?
Mitochondria lie in rows throughout the cells near muscle proteins with use of ATP during contraction
What is covered by the sarcolemma?
Skeletal muscles with fibres
What is the sarcolemma?
Skeletal muscles containing fibres
What does sarcolemma contain?
Sarcoplasm and T-tubules
What is the sarcoplasm?
Muscle cell cytoplasm
What does the sarcoplasm contain?
-Large amounts of glycogen for energy production
-Myoglobin for oxygen
What is the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
System for tubular sacs
What is the sarcoplasmic reticulum similar to?
Smooth ER
What is the function of the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
-Stores Ca²⁺ in a relaxed muscle
-Release of Ca²⁺ triggers muscle contraction
