Muscle Cells Flashcards
What are the three types of muscle tissue called?
-Smooth muscle tissue
-Cardiac muscle tissue
-Skeletal muscle tissue
What are some features of smooth muscle tissue?
-Short, tapered cells
-No striations
Where is smooth muscle tissue found?
Stomach and airways of muscles
What does smooth muscle tissue do?
Contracts and relaxes involuntarily
What are some features of cardiac muscle tissue?
-One nucleus per cell
-Striated with intercalated discsW
Where is cardiac muscle tissue found?
Heart
What does cardiac muscle tissue do?
Cells divide and converge
What are some features of skeletal muscle tissue?
-Long
-Multinuclear parallel cells
-Striated (perpendicular to fibre)
Where is skeletal muscle tissue found?
-Bone
-Skin
-Fascia
What do skeletal musclle tissues do?
-Each one has its own nerve to stimulate contraction and its own artery and vein
-Voluntary
What are regulatory proteins?
-Turns contractions on/off
-Troponin and tropomyosin
-Troponin is composed of the sub-units(I,C and T) that contract with calcium(C), actin(I) and tropomyosin(T)
What is myosin?
Thick filaments
What happens to myosin during muscle contraction?
Myosin heads extend towards the thin filaments
What are the Z discs held together by?
M line proteins
What are the myosin binding sites covered by?
Tropmyosin when relaxed
