Structure of the nervous system | Organ Systems Flashcards
2 main structural parts: CNS and PNS
Forebrain - cerebrum
Midbrain - midbrain - on top brainstem
Hindbrain - pons, medulla, cerebellum
SC
Nervous sys
brain and SC
CNS -
all over rest body; 2 types structures: nerves; ganglion (lumps attached to nerves and contain soma of nerves); cranial nerves (exit brain - 12 pairs) or spinal nerves (exit SC - 31 pairs)
PNS -
in front and back - efferent in front and afferent in the back; come together in spinal nerves - mixed nerves
Spinal nerves form from spinal nerve roots -
original nerves see with naked eye; very far away - microscopic nerves
As travel from proximal origin all nerves branch repeatedly -
info into CNS
Afferent neurons -
info out CNS into periphery
Efferent neuron -
cerebrum (4 lobes - part on top and biggest on top); cerebellum
Brain diff parts:
top to bottom: midbrain (connects to cerebrum), pons, medulla oblongata
brainstem hooks onto SC
