NS Reading Flashcards
Myelinated axons - white; have gaps: nodes of Ranvier
Nonmyelinated - gray
Nervous sys cells: structure and func
Dementia - chronic confusional state/syndrome - gen term progressive loss of brain func and impaired cognition
Alzheimer’s disease - most common type dememntia typically affects older 65 yrs
Affects person’s ability learn new info and eventually impairs language, judgment, behavior
Alzheimer’s disease
Progressive neurodegenerative disease one most common neurologic disorders of older adults
Debilitating disease affecting mobility
4 cardinal signs: tremor, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability
Interferes with movement as a result of dopamine loss in brain
Parkinson’s disease
Abnormal, sudden, excessive, uncontrolled electrical discharge of neurons within the brain that may result in change in LOC, motor/sensory ability, and/or behavior
Seizures
Is an infection of meninges of the brain and SC, specifically pia mater and arachnoid
Meningitis
Caused by immune, genetic, and/or infectious factors that affects myelin and nerve fibers of brain and SC
Leading causes disability
Demyelination
MS
Classifed as incomplete/complete
Incomplete: some func or movement below level injury; more common
Complete: SC damaged eliminates all innervations below level injury
SCI
Arise anywhere within the brain structures and named according to the cell/tissue where originate
Primary - within CNS
Secondary - metastasis
Compress and displace normal brain tissue
Cerebral edema results
Brain tumors
