Structure of Long Bone Flashcards
LB:
Articular Cartilage
That covers the end of bones where they come together to form a joint
LB:
Cancellous Bone
Spongy bone that stores red bone marrow in its “honeycomb” structure and lies within the compact bone layers, providing the long bone with elastic strength
LB:
Growth/Epiphyseal Plate
Separates the diaphysis from the epiphysis and is the only place where an increase in bone length can take place
LB:
Marrow Cavity
Contains two types of bone marrow:
1. Red - produces red and white blood cells and platelets
2. Yellow - Produces fat and cartilage
LB:
Periosteum
Tough protective layer of the bone, which also contains nerves and blood vessels that feed the bone
LB:
Compact Bone
Hard, dense bone that gives strength to the hollow part of the bone and is resistant to bending
