Anatomy of Heart Flashcards
Coronary Arteries
The blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
Atria (Right and Left Atrium)
- Upper chambers
- Receive blood returning to your heart from body or lungs
Ventricles
- Pumping chambers
- Thicker walls than atria
Bicuspid Valve
- Situated between left atrium and left ventricle
- Allows blood to flow in one direction only
Tricuspid Valve
- Located between right atrium and right ventricle
- Allows blood flow from the right atrium to right ventricle
- Prevents blood from flowing backwards
Semilunar Valves (Aortic and Pulmonary Valve)
- Prevent backflow from the aorta and left ventricle
Chordae Tendinae
Chord like tendons connected to the bicuspid and tricuspid valves to prevent valves from turning inside out
Aorta
- Originates in left ventricle
- Carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except lungs
Superior Vena Cava
A vein that receives deoxygenated blood from the upper body to empty into the right atrium of the heart
Inferior Vena Cava
Vein that receives deoxygenated blood from the lower body to empty into the right atrium of the heart
Pulmonary Vein
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Pulmonary Artery
Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart back to the lungs
