Dysphagia
difficulting swallowing
Dysarthria
decreased ability to speak clearly, loss of muscular control for speaking, slurred speech
Aphasia
partial or complete inability to communicate
Hemiparesis
weakness on one side of the body
Hemianopsia
loss of vision in half of the vision field
Hemiplegia
loss of muscle control, partial or total paralysis on one side of the body
Ataxia
inability to coordinate muscle activity during voluntary movement
Expressive aphasia
broca’s aphasia, difficulty producing sentences, limited speech
Receptive aphasia
wenicke’s aphasia, inability to understand
Lability
uncontrolled, spontaneous reactions that occur for no apparent reason and is a physical reaction in the brain
Agnosia
failure to recognize familiar objects perceived by the senses
Paresthesia
sensation of numbness or tingling
Dysphagia interventions
Assist patient with meals, place food on the unaffected side of mouth, give ample time to eat
Dysarthria interventions
Allow time to communicate, provide alternative communication methods, be a support
Aphasia interventions
Speak clearly and in simple questions, use gestures/pictures when able, establish alternative communication
