Stroke/Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) Flashcards
What is a Stroke/CVA
Sudden interruption of the blood supply to the brain
What is a hemorrhagic stroke
ruptured artery/aneurysm
What is a thrombotic stroke
blood clot in cerebral artery
What is an embolic stroke
blood clot from another part of the body that travels to the cerebral artery
What are risk factors for strokes
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
What is the left hemisphere of the brain responsible for
- language
- math skills
- understanding language
S/S of left hemisphere stroke
- expressive aphasia (inability to speak/understand language)
- reading and writing difficulties
- right sided hemiparesis (weakness)
- hemiplegia (paralysis)
What is the right hemisphere of the brain responsible for
- vision
- awareness of surrounding
S/S of right hemisphere stroke
- poor judgement and impulse control
- overestimation of abilities
- left sided hemiparesis
- hemiplegia
How to treat an ischemic stroke
administer thrombolytics within 3 hours of symptoms
How to treat a hemorrhagic stoke
administer antihypertensives
Nursing care for a patient with a Stroke/CVA
- monitor BP
- reposition frequently to protect from pressure injuries
What should be implemented for a Stroke/CVA
fall precaution
Teaching about eating for a Stroke/CVA patient
- assess swallow, gag reflex
- ticken liquids
- teach pt to tuck chin to chest when swallowing
What technique should the nurse teach the patient who had a Stroke/CVA and is experiencing homonymous hemianopsia (loss of visual field)
scanning technique
-turn head from direction of unaffected side to affected side
